Narborough Road Primary Care Centre in Leicester is one of a new breed of PFI care centres built to the most exacting standards, and for this purpose, Pilkington Activ™ self-cleaning glass was specified for the windows on part of this modern, contemporary structure.
Designed by architects, the Design Buro, the building utilises the latest in design technology and innovative materials and Pilkington Activ™ fitted these criteria perfectly. The product has been installed into the ribbon windows of the focal and distinctive angled roof rotunda that lies at the centre of the building, with the windows encircling the top to flood the reception area below with natural light. These bespoke windows comprising inward opening windows with automated actuators, were designed by Sapa Building Systems and fabricated and installed by Bonam and Berry, with Pilkington Activ™ specified to provide a low maintenance option.
Graham Hurrell, Director of Specification Sales at Sapa, is delighted with the result. “Using Pilkington Activ™ glass helped us to value engineer the window specification and in the long run, has helped to reduce the overall cost from the architect’s proposal,” he explains. “Using the glass enabled us to devise a less complicated opening mechanism as we could eliminate from the design the need for cleaning.”
Pilkington Activ™ glass eliminates the hassles, hazards and costs involved with cleaning inaccessible windows. The two–stage cleaning process begins when the coating reacts with the sun’s rays and breaks down organic dirt particles on the surface of the glass. Then secondly, when it rains, the hydrophilic nature of the coating makes the water sheet down the surface, taking away any loosened dirt. This revolutionary product continues to work even on cloudy days and during the night.
In order to further extend options for the specifier, Pilkington has extended the Activ™ product range, adding Pilkington Activ™ Blue - an attractive blue tinted glass, which combines both self-cleaning and solar control properties. In addition, the company has also introduced Pilkington Activ™ Neutral with the same solar control and self-cleaning properties as Activ Blue, but with a neutral appearance, ideal for conservatory roofs and vertical glazing.
The Narborough Road Primary Care Centre is part of the Government’s Local Improvement Finance Trust Scheme (LIFT) and is one of a number of projects in the area that has made use of Pilkington Activ™, providing facility managers with significantly reduced maintenance costs, and the option of high performance glazing for most types of fenestration.
