A change of ownership can sometimes have negative effects on a business, but two years after purchasing Great Northern Windows in Nottinghamshire, the owners of the window and door fabricator have seen it go from strength to strength.
Since taking over the management of the Eastwood-based Kömmerling fabricator in September 2006, following the retirement of the previous owner, Richard Allen and Emily Hutchinson have more than doubled the size of its factory and invested in new production machinery. This has allowed the company to accommodate the Kömmerling Connoisseur system, with its revolutionary ‘ovolo’ design and lead-free greenline® specification, to create environmentally friendly PVC-u window frames.
Together the two owners make the perfect management partnership, with Richard’s ten years of experience on the manufacturing side of the industry, and Emily’s twelve years expertise in a management role at the company giving Great Northern a strong leadership in all parts of the business.
Emily Hutchinson says, “We are delighted with how the company has steadily developed over these last two years. It’s been hard work at times but we both enjoy the responsibilities and working for ourselves. It did take a short time to get used to a second system when we introduced the Connoisseur, but the production side has been very busy.”
In addition to the increase in business, Emily and Richard have revamped the Great Northern logo and overseen the complete refurbishment of the entire office. What is more, unlike many business takeovers, there have been no restructures or redundancies therefore keeping staff morale extremely high.
On the subject of production, Richard Allen explains, “With a gradual increase in production we’ve also maintained the quality of the finished product. We chose to use profile from Kömmerling as we recognise the quality of these systems and the numerous benefits they have for customers.”
Finally, Emily explains the company’s plans for the future: “With a number of companies in this industry currently struggling we are keeping to what we know we can produce at present. If we continue to gradually progress then investment in the foreseeable future could certainly be an option to us.”
