With its commitment to improving safety working conditions within the construction industry, Pilkington Building Products has launched two new versions of its innovative Pilkington
Activ™ self-cleaning glass system, which will help to alleviate the impact of the recently introduced EU Work at Height Directive.
Falls from height remain the single biggest cause of death in the construction industry and the introduction of the Work at Height Directive in April 2005, led to increased demand for advanced construction products and systems that help to minimise risk to operatives working at height. The Directive applies to all work at height where there is a risk of fall liable to cause personal injury, placing responsibility on employers or anyone who controls the work of others. Its introduction has caused building designers to rethink their approach to safety and Pilkington Activ™ self-cleaning glass is being heralded as a revolutionary concept that significantly reduces the amount of time required for cleaning operatives to work at height.
Since its launch three years ago, Pilkington Activ™ has been extensively specified for both new build and refurbishment projects, particularly within the public sector where there is a larger percentage of high-rise multiple occupancy properties. This truly innovative product works through a microscopically thin coating of titanium dioxide, which creates two reactions by which it continually cleans the external surface of the glass.
Pilkington Activ™ Blue has also been developed following market demand and, as an ideal, cost-effective solution for all conservatory roofs, promises to reduce significantly the danger as well as the chore, of cleaning these notoriously difficult and challenging areas. Pilkington Activ™ Blue is readily available and will provide performance for the lifetime of the conservatory itself, in addition to combining excellent self-cleaning properties combined with excellent solar control and good light transmission.
“The emphasis on safety is one of the foremost issues in the construction industry and we have invested heavily in identifying areas where we can reduce the risks to operatives working at height,” comments Matt Buckley, Marketing Director of Pilkington Building Products. “The expansion of the Pilkington Activ™ self-cleaning range reduces the risks associated with cleaning windows, as the continuous cleaning properties keep the building looking pristine and, in addition, save large sums of money for specialist cleaning and maintenance regimes.”
