Pilkington glass is specified in two Passiv Haus retrofits in West London. The refurbished Victorian homes are a clear example of how to install triple glazing without changing the look of a property.
Ryder Strategies Europe manufactured 35 new windows for the two houses. The new window designs are almost indistinguishable from the original Victorian sash windows, ensuring the design blends in with the surrounding buildings and meet the conservation rules of the area.
Both projects – delivered by Ryder Strategies Europe and greentomatoenergy - were completed to meet the Passiv Haus specification - the German based standard for delivering very low energy buildings. Passiv Haus homes typically achieve an energy saving of 95% compared to existing Victorian housing stock. To meet this very stringent specification, the windows have to be below 0.8 U-value and airtight. The heating requirement for such a building is just 15.0 kWh/m²/yr, making the windows an essential element in ensuring these two buildings are the most energy efficient Victorian properties in the country.
To conform to Part L 2010 of the Building Regulations, refurbishments must have a U-value of 1.6W/m²K; each window in these zero carbon properties was designed not to exceed a whole window U-value of 0.8W/m²K. This is significantly better than normal refurbishment specifications. The Passiv Haus standards demand the use of efficient components and a whole house ventilation system to achieve exceptionally low energy use and ensure long-term sustainability. The houses have no heating systems as such, heat is provided by the inhabitants of the house, the electrical appliances in the house and the solar gain through the windows that glass maximises.
